Handy tip for using a shield cell without a heat sink

Postby Phillipus » Fri Mar 11, 2016 3:24 pm

Since the last patch if you're using a high grade shield cell you'll need to launch a heat sink at the same time to keep the heat down and avoid module damage. This is certainly the case with the 8A SCB in my Cutter.

In the Cutter, I also have a bank of 6A shield cells that I use to "top up" my shields when there's a quiet moment. I found that if I stow all weapons, turn off thrusters and sensors then the ship's temperature drops to 22%. This is low enoough to use a 6A shield cell without causing undue heat and damage.

This might be worth testing out in other ships and other SCB types.

I use A3 or 4 on my courier and no sinks. I just stop shooting lasers for a few moments before popping cells. And yes she will overheat 108-120 for a few moments. Heat damage isnt that bad as everyone makes it sound. You will be ok

I use A7s on my Corvette without heat sinks, too. Just don't fire energy weapons for a few seconds before and after, and the heat damage is minimal. I just repair it the next time I dock.

Do you get much damage?

If I fire the SCB's 6-8 times I will have some damage. It's usually less that 10% and rarely causes a module to loose functionality. You could carry a AFMU to repair the modules as needed, too.

As JL said you just need a AFMU. The damage from heat will never be to hull and it is cheaper to reload an AMFU than to repair module damage. From what I understand you also don't need to worry about module malfunction till below 70% so if your shields are not coming down you don't have to repair the modules till after quite a few uses unless you feel like going through the trouble.

Nice tips. I'll need to do some experimenting when I get back from the DWE.

One thing though, I heard that the FSD will cause random emergency drops, with hull damage, if it drops below 80%. That's probably not too much of an issue from taking heat damage just from using SCBs.
It's time to give this another go.
