Horizons Beta, The Data Link Scanner.

I and many others have in the ongoing Beta been a little perplexed for what the Data Link Scanner does, since when we have tried using it on anything it doesn't seem to do anything.

It's perpexing and will probably be fixed very soon, but for now the case is.

The scanner needs to be deployed, the devs have forgotten to deploy this along with the turret when you exit your ship, and the regular "deploy hardpoints" button doesn't do anything inside the buggy (aptly named little craft, probably why FD is so adament it's an SRV..)

The solution is somewhat annoying, but simple.

Go into control options and under the weapons category set "firing deploys hardpoints" to ON.

You also need to assign a dedicated key to the DTS directly.

For some reason just defining this in fire grouping does nothing, unless setting it to fire one in group 1, this means you can't shoot the turret.
You might as well just bind secondary fire to the Data Link Scanner directly.

All the pre-defined key binds has this set which is why switching to a default key binding scheme has worked.
I believe this will be patched very soon, but figured I might as well make post here on it.

The scanner only needs to be deployed once after exiting your ship too, once deployed it stays deployd until you go back into the ship.

Awesome, annoying but now I know it wasn't me doing anything wrong! :D

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that next time I get a chance (aka tomorrow).

I'm also unable to target anything (except my ship and the planet) when driving and using the wave scanner. Do you think this will solve this problem too? I think the key binding is "target while driving" and I've used buttons and keys and nothing works for me.

***edit***
Never mind about the wave scanner and targeting - I just didn't have anything to target. Then I searched a depot for 45 min and never found a data point. I'll get to check this fix eventually.

Is this still the only way to scan? I've tried scanning a few times and nothing ever happened, I thought maybe I just need to have a mission to scan a specific mission target.
Then saw this. I have always kept that setting off so that there will be no accidents. I would like to keep it off. But can I, if I wish to use scanner again?

Yup bugs med to no end still, but without this set to on, the scanner will not deploy..

Luckily I need to use this about as often as I need to clean my coffe maker, about once of twice a month.
It's a rather useless thing to have really.

I just done a mission to scan a communication relay. Great fun, took out the large ship guns, then went in going for the skimmers and eventually found the communication node :D

Was great fun!

It is really annoying that this bug still exists though, all the way through beta and two updates now :(
