How to use the new Elite log file?

So I have been thinking of going back into the black with my second account, maybe heading for colonia eventually. I was thinking about the log file and how to use it to record my travels, what info does the new log file contain and what is the best software to help record it? Previously I had used Captains Log but it was a little clunky (although a great bit of software!).

I use this one, and it is absolutely excellent. Automatic parsing etc. pp.
Only drawback is, it doesn't read my 2014/15 netlogs for some reason ... :(

It contains a lot really

Scooped something, yup it's there.
Picked up a material, yup.
Scooped fuel from a star, yup and how much fuel you scooped as well.

Landed on a planet, you betcha. With planet coordinates.
Etc
etc

Captain's Log 2 is still in beta but works quite well with the new netlog, so does the current ED Discovery 5.x. Personally, I use both, plus EDDI for some voice alerts

I've recently started using EDD and I'm sure I don't use half the facilities on offer. It can show everything it extracts from the journal, but you can set filters for items you don't want to see displayed.

It even revealed text exchanges with other pilots that were not shown in the comms panel, so although ED was receiving and logging the full conversation, it wasn't showing it to me.

I'd completely forgot about the log after reading about it on the change log for 2.2.
Where is it stored and is it readable as a text file or anything?
