Landing gear and cargo hatch have the same effect of halving your speed for a given throttle setting. They are not cumulative - either separately and both together yield the same overall reduction.
The other benefit of deploying either is that boost is disabled, making those unwanted interfaces with the inside station wall a bit less likely. Lost my first vulture that way...

I've managed to do a few smuggle mission using just the speed, tip is to get to 7.5k request docking then run out to about 10k and line up then run like the wind. Once I get inside the dock I reduce speed and use docking computer to land me.
Has worked really well so far and only got scanned twice but that was at outposts when security showed up looking for me, but apart from that it's been mostly pretty cool.
Really appreciate the tip on using speed only, they need to work on silent running abit more to make it feasible as with the heat rising so fast it makes it a useless feature.
