Elite: Dangerous on E3 2015, out on Xbox One now!

Elite: Dangerous is available on Xbox One immediatly.

Also the new PVP mode "CQC", an arena stile fighting match was announced and it will be available first on Xbox and later this year on PC and Mac.

Now this sounds like a really good idea to me for several reasons:
Firstly, a console game without any way to get some action quickly will not last very long.
Secondly, it keeps the pew-pew crowd occupied and hopefully satisfied for a long time.
And lastly, I think I actually might enjoy that kind of thing! :)
It is in a confined arena, it is not forced on players, so all in all it sounds like a good idea to me. We could hold our own little dialed down versions in the group, you know, like oldtimer races ;)

Here's the trailer for the CQC mode and the link to a comment from David Braben on the official community site.

Bloody Hell, that's one smeggin' boner-producing trailer!

Reckon the insurance company will make a FORTUNE off those console-jockeys if they try to fly like that ;)

Well an 'arena mode' idea has been floating around for sometime so there is no real surprise here, nor is it a surprise that it'll be on the XBO first, Microsoft will want to push exclusive or early access content for their new console, so undoubtedly FD get something from the deal, more money from XBOX Live sales perhaps.

Also, given how many games have an arena mode, it's not surprising that ED, which has natural combat mechanics, would have it, hell even WoW has arena play.

As for CQC, well firstly (despite what many on the official forum are saying) it does fit the game lore, given that destroying other ships rewards you with a rank (and always has done) it would be inevitable that it would be turned into a sport. Further to this, the community has shown, through things like Kate Russell's 'Demolition Derby' and the 'Buckeyball Run', that in-game competitions are a popular thing.

Secondly, it could turn into quite a fun thing to follow, assuming it is held in various venues, has league tables, etc, then it could be fun to a) watch, and b) to follow your favourite team or Commander. I could even see 'Power' based teams competing, adding a further nuance to the PP metagame.

Also, it does look quite fun, I hope there is an 'against NPC' mode, but I do like the idea of a 'Mobius' version as well.

Finally, anything that helps makes more sales can only be a good thing, more sales means more money to spend on development, and that means more features and content for all of us.

a dam great video, but what really annoys me is that arena combat and even powerplay was suggested by me back in 2013, I can dig up the proof if need be. but that video really hits the spot.

I remember that video and agreeing with everything there including the "THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN TO YOU" but then the Lugh event happened. In open Lugh was something. You would get in over your head in a CZ, jump to supercruise to make the less than 10 Ly hop to a station, get dicted within 5 seconds of being in supercruise, and if you were lucky enough to evade there was an Anaconda or three at the station.

my only concern is that now FD's focus will be on the xbox and we'll have to get by with broken RESes and missions - imo those things and others like them are game-breakers and need to be fixed immediately. i wondered why they were not, and now this shows up. it certainly explains a few things.

"It’s a separate option on the menu"

That's a shame. It should be in the main game, much like a CZ or res. You can fly into it if you want or not. Then it also becomes a much more cohesive part of the game. Could even be a CG/Competitions with the venue moving around to different star systems.

If it is just like the current training games it feels forced and something to please the PVP crowd while also be condescending (basically saying 'you don't deserve to be part of the main game'). Even advertising on GalNet for location(s - doesn't just need to be one in the galaxy!) and any upcoming or present event(s).
