Started watching the Expanse

Postby Orochimaru » Mon Jul 03, 2017 9:21 am

Hi all

Started watching the Expanse, episode 1. Seems to be a good series.
Now I have one more thing to dream about, while flying in E:D :)

Do you guys watch it?

Watched the first season on netflix myself, and then introduced my dad to it as well. We both agree that its good, hard science fiction, although the storyline is a little convoluted in the early episodes.

Will have to look for the books now. Although from the synopses I've read, it kinda goes off the rails in the third one a bit...

So how does the show compare to the books?

As an avid reader, I find it hard to remember all the specifics but I think I read the first 4/5 and to be honest thats when I stopped. In my opinion, although very well written, with belters and their language and the Earth/Mars dynamic, they were going a bit awry. This happens with the vast majority of series that go past three in my opinion.

Anyway, to answer your question specifically, the show doesn't really compare. As I said, the books are very well written and a lot happens, so the show struggles to keep up and include most of it. Couple this with the fact they have had to (understandably) change the plot and its not really comparable. What I struggle to let go is the change/toning down of one of the characters called Chrisjen Avasarala
Having said all that, as a space series, its good. I'm 3 episodes into season 2 and its much improved on the first. Most of the acting is top notch, especially Thomas Jane as Millar. Just wish it had a bit more of a budget though.
If you haven't read the books, I'd recommend it and then if you are a reader go for the books.

Well in about a week I will be sitting in a River in France with a Beer Cooler that floats and a Kindle. May or may not have swim trunks on (there's a visual for you all :P ) and a Hat and a week to do nothing. May have to pick up the first one and see for myself.
