Hi, not sure if this is off-topic or not, but just wanted to ask, now that Elite Dangerous is nearly upon us - Are there any of us that still plays the old versions, either the first one, or Elite Frontier.

I do

I sometimes play Frontier: Elite 2 in my head...

I guess it made such an impact on me, that when ever I think about space games, the images I get are from FE2.

I wonder if E: D can take its place...

I used to play Oolite a lot, which is a modern version of Elite and very cool. Lately though I spend my time "testing" (and by testing I mean playing) ED

I couldn`t really get into Oolite, but I think I tried playing it when it first came out. I was looking for and was into playing retro game remakes and stumbled upon it from a site somewhere I cannot remember... (sorry slipped into Treebeard mode then)......

I recall that there were other Elite remakes, some of them quite good. Pioneer is ok, but I think it could be better. I tend to play the GLFrontier version on my Android Tablet. Great for Trading etc, but its a pain when fighting, as the controls are rubbish.

I'm still playing the Amiga version of Frontier (best music)! For the past 15 years I have been attempting to reach the galactic core in an imperial courier.

Play it off an on, so I'm nowhere near the centre :D

You can get ship editors for the PC version which allows you to stop the drive wear and tear etc. Great for long distance travelling.

I try to play Frontier still, because it's everything I want a space game to be. And I try to tell myself that I'm not superficial and that graphics don't matter. But they do, and I really struggle to immerse myself in Frontier now, as absorbing as it was when it was released.

I really do like ED, and as remakes of Elite go, it's absolutely spot-on. But what I'd really been hoping for all these years since FFE was a similarly gorgeous remake of Frontier.

Pioneer is a fantastic project, and I play it a lot, but it did lose a certain something when the Elite ship models were taken out. I'd love to see FD grant the Pioneer project the right to use them, though I guess as it's an open-source project that'd essentially mean releasing them on the same licence.

It'll come, don't worry. Planetary landings will be next and then your dream (same as mine) will come true. And after that I'm hoping I can get out of my ship and explore the planet and look up at the stars and a moon from the top of a mountain and it begins to snow.

I could just lose myself in it.
