Douche Rock

So I guess I'm a fan. I've heard the term before, but just heard it again on the radio. I'm not sure if the term refers to the music, the musicians, or the people listening to it - or maybe all of the above.
It seems that the kings of douche rock are Nickelback. Is it because Chad Kroeger has/had a mullet and a douchey beard? If it's because the lead singer is a whiny douche, than I guess Van Halen was douche rock, because David Lee Roth was probably the biggest douche that ever existed, though I never thought Van Halen were douche rock when I was in junior high school. Other names I've heard associated with douche rock are Green Day, Creed, Daughtry, Linkin Park, 3 Doors Down, Stained, Chevelle, Seether, Three Days Grace, Matchbox 20, Avenged Sevenfold, Fallout Boy and etc, and even older bands like Journey, Loverboy, Survivor, Night Ranger, Starship ... and on and on.
I'm at least familiar with most of the newer stuff, and really like a lot of the newer songs. The older stuff is a healthy part of the soundtrack of my youth (music I actually bought, rather than just pirated). I don't really see how a lot of this stuff is different from other bands I was listening to when I was young, such as: Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Foreigner, Boston, U2, Dire Straits, Scorpions, Riot, Aerosmith, Metallica, and many, many more.
As for me, I think the definition of douche rock probably best applies to music that whiny little douches don't like or are jealous of.
